Cultivating as a way of inhabiting.

Sowing and planting as a foundational, embodied, symbolic, and affective gesture.

The possibility of imagining another future—rooted, open, and shared.

The name Replicantes carries multiple layers of meaning. On one hand, it refers to the Spanish verb repicar, a term commonly used in nursery practice to describe the moment when a seedling is transplanted from the seedbed into its first container. On the other hand, it evokes the replicants of Blade Runner, inspired by Philip K. Dick's novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?: synthetic beings who, unexpectedly, develop emotions and self-awareness.

This ambiguity between the artificial and the living, between what is produced and what ultimately escapes control, resonated from the outset as a metaphor for the act of cultivation. Within a dystopian context, planting became a form of resistance.

The intersection of science fiction and botany is not merely an aesthetic gesture but a conceptual foundation of the project. The reference to replicants raises a fundamental question: what does it mean to cultivate life in a world that is falling apart? Speculative fiction offers a way of looking at the present from another perspective, imagining that even what is mass-produced—whether a transplanted seedling or a synthetic android—can develop sensitivity, desire, and agency.

In this way, Replicantes brings together two temporalities: that of plant propagation and that of imagined futures. It proposes a nursery that cultivates not only plants, but also possible ways of inhabiting the world to come.

“The relationship between art and plants in my work is neither illustrative nor decorative, but structural. I see in plants a formal intelligence that organizes space and shapes time: the way they grow, expand, and adapt. A leaf, for instance, can be understood as a solar surface, a threshold between energy and matter; a forest, as a living sculpture that articulates volumes, flows, and communities. This perspective informs both the formal decisions in my artistic practice and the way I cultivate and conceive of the nursery: not as a site of serial production, but as a perceptual laboratory where each species reveals a distinct way of inhabiting the world.”
